I’m on my second pass on this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Forces-Good-High-Impact-Nonprofits-non-Franchise/dp/0787986127/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296324864&sr=8-1
It is a blueprint for making The New Sports Economy Institute a success.
Did you know that the non-profit sector is the third largest sector of the U.S. economy with more than $1T in annual economic activity? See this report:
http://www.urban.org/uploadedpdf/412209-nonprof-public-charities.pdf
Look at the 10-year growth rate. Astounding!
With the current political climate tilting (correctly) toward education and innovation, I believe that our vision married to a good starter outline of where we are taking this will position us well for fundraising.
In summary, here are the 6 common characteristics of high-impact non-profits that are profiled in detail in that book:
.. First.. they ALL are catalysts for SYSTEMIC change.. sound familiar?
1. Work with government and advocate for policy change
2. Harness market forces
3. Create meaningful experiences for their supporters thereby creating evangelists
4. Build and nurture non-profit networks. “Grow the field” by treating potential competitors as partners.
5. Very adaptive to the changing social, economic and political environment
6. Share leadership
These are actually very good principles for CWH and the SRI as well.
#3 in terms of the SRI will happen through the empowerment and enjoyment experienced by the traders. Where I’m a bit stumped is how to apply #3 to the educational side.. maybe through a free-play SRI trading simulator that awards prizes to top earners? We could fund these prize purchases as part of the non-profit expense line. Comments?
